Very happy to have had Samira and Yannick over at Talking Clay Studio in Dharamshala for a week. Samira found us through Google, while looking for a place in the Himalayas where she could pot and her friend Yannick joined the 7 day beginners course.
It’s our first time welcoming people to the studio. We have always envisioned sharing this beautiful studio space and hope this is just the beginning of such happenings.
We had some amazing conversations through the 7 days. About movies/books/news and their impact on our minds. If creating movies is predicting or defining the future? About living in a community space. The hierarchy, politics and religion of such living. Being choice full versus going with the unconscious heard or whatever flow is available.
Yannick shared that he is on a journey to gain more knowledge and inner wisdom. Samira can’t wait to open her own studio in Dheradun.

Visited friends yesterday.
Road trip, some 50 Km to Palampur area, to a small (but famous!) village called Andretta. It’s on the tourist map, thanks to the Shobha Singh Art Gallery and The Andretta Pottery Studio.
We do a day trip from Dharamshala to Andreatta as part of the 21 day workshop on meditation and pottery.
It’s an interesting experience to sit on traditional kick wheels and use terracotta clay. In a very village style environment!
Andretta is a production studio which also teaches pottery during a 3 month workshop once every year. This is more than just a workshop, as you get to stay in a beautiful house in the village with Mini and Mary. The house is filled with books on pottery, pots from great potters from around the world. Mansimiran Singh is the son of Gurucharan Singh (the father of pottery in India). Here is also one of the only museums on the theme of Pottery in India. A small shop where you can pick up pots, cups, vases is a treat for all the regular tourist groups visiting.
There is also a toy train that has a station at the nearby village – Panchrukhi (2Km from Andretta)
In Andretta is also a lovely mud building (made in the traditional mud construction styling) used as a writer’s retreat. Norah Richards was a British lady, far ahead of her times. She came to India and had a dream of setting up an artist community in this village. Here a little history about the place –
The Way of the Artist – drinking and sharing the divine!
On the Path of Meditation/Awareness/Technicality the technique and skill level is important. You will need to be very focused on artistic technicalities. Become skillful at the chosen medium of art. Perfection will become your goal.
A student of the art of Pottery will be asked to make and break all pots till a day comes when the teacher sees perfection. Only then do they allow the student to fire the pot. It’s like their graduation ceremony. Like saying yes you’ve picked up the techniques. You are skilled in the art of pottery. This is the method of Practice. Every day you might dedicate an hour or 5 to your art form. Therefore the correct teacher is necessary on this path. To guide and be aware of when the student’s work has transformed. And the student has become an Artist.
On the Path of Love/Surrender/Totality the medium of art is used more playfully. Just whatever comes you create. No need to think about wrong or right. The process of art is based on a non-judgmental attitude with full acceptance of whatever is getting created. This is where we say all of us are born Artists. Playful like children. Painting, singing or dancing with no judgments.
The artist comes to a place, where everything created looks divine. The eyes and how they look have transformed. The being has transformed.
As the journey culminates, on either of the paths, you may find yourself criss crossing these paths once or even a couple of times before you realize they are the same.
So from this point on, everything starts getting created on its own. Like a happening. And that’s when the creator and creation become one.
The Way of the Artist
Is a beauty-full and playful way to drink and share the Divine!
